Rijeka is a large port city on the Kvarner Bay in northeastern Croatia, with a population of about 144,000 in an area of 44 square kilometres.
Picturesquely, the Rjecina River bisects the town of Rijeka before flowing into the Adriatic Sea. The river also gave the town its name.
First traces of settlements in the region point far back to the Stone Age, until finally the Celts founded the actual city. To this day, Rijeka is the most important port city in Croatia.
Sights in Rijeka
The many changes of rulers throughout Rijeka’s history have left their mark everywhere in the city. Therefore, there is no shortage of cultural and historical monuments here.
In the magnificent old town, on Rijecka rezolucija Square, lies the 14th-century Dominican monastery of St. Jerome, which, however, underwent numerous structural changes, especially in the late Baroque period.
No less imposing is the Art Nouveau building of the Rijeka Palace of Justice on the northern border of the old town.
Slightly elevated, but still in the city centre, is the extremely picturesque Sv. Vid Cathedral, the construction of which began in 1638. The interior of the church is a Baroque masterpiece in itself, with the marble statues by P. Lazzarini, A. Michelazzi and L. Pacassi being the highlight.
Leisure activities in Rijeka
Not to be missed, however, is a visit to the bustling market and fish hall. The lively hustle and bustle and the uniqueness of many goods, make shopping here an absolute experience of the senses.
With a hire car, a detour to the nearby mountain village of Kastav is also worthwhile. Here you can still find the primitive and original way of life of the Croats.
